Ensuring fire safety in modern buildings is a complex issue that requires competent specialists, clear roles and responsibilities at every stage of the design, construction and operation of buildings. The development of knowledge and competencies in the field of fire safety is a necessity accompanying the construction of any modern building.

WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE MODERN BUILDING?
To meet people’s requirements for convenience, comfort, functionality and healthy environment, the modern buildings are distinguished by modern architecture and complex configuration, new construction and building materials, energy efficient solutions and advanced technologies for security, safety and comfort. The modern buildings are no longer just a place to live, but are increasingly becoming part of the urban ecosystem and contribute environmental, socio-cultural and economic benefits to people and society. The ambition is to achieve sustainable operation with a minimum of resources, resource circularity, zero emissions and minimal or close to zero environmental impact.
In the modern buildings there are increasingly using of new highly efficient insulation and building materials which have excellent thermal and mechanical performance and contribute to the sustainability of the building, but in terms of fire safety they are a risk factor, as they are unstable at high temperatures or easily flammable. Using such materials requires a change in existing methods of fire protection, and on the other hand – opens up new opportunities for the implementation of modern technological solutions for fire safety. It is essential to develop knowledge and competencies related to the implementation of sustainable, future-oriented, technological solutions for fire protection as part of the development of sustainable construction.
WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FIRE PROTECTION?
The modern fire protection is an essential part of the construction of sustainable buildings. The modern fire protection develops in three directions:
- High competence for fire safety
- New technological solutions for fire safety
- Ecological solutions for fire safety
The new architectural spaces, new construction and insulation materials require new technological solutions and high competence in the field of fire safety. Fire safety requires conscious responsibility and holistic approach that begins with careful research and analysis, development of engineering concept and design project followed by strict implementation, deployment and maintenance throughout the life cycle of the building. The most effective solution is the holistic approach, which combines the following three groups of measures:
1) Correct concept of fire protection
The right protection concept can only be achieved thorough analysis, in-depth knowledge, competencies and extensive engineering practice. It is necessary to determine the purpose of fire protection, as well as to make an accurate analysis of the risk of fire occurrence and an assessment of the consequences of a fire.
2) Early fire detection, notification and fire extinguishing systems
The implementation of fire safety systems is mandatory, especially in large buildings, buildings with high or medium height, warehouses and industrial sites. Reliable fire detection and extinguishing systems are crucial for building of sustainable fire protection.
3) Fire safety management
This measure is particularly important to prevent fire or reduce the effects of fire. It can be accomplished by assigning more responsibilities in terms of planning, construction, renovation and maintenance of the fire safety systems. Campaigns to raise awareness and provide training for both owners and managers, as well as for building occupants, are also a very effective measure to improve the culture of fire safety in buildings.
