What does the implementation of a fire safety system require?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the modern business environment, information security is of great importance for development of any company. That is why the fire protection of data centers as a basic element of the information infrastructure is of critical importance for the activity of companies. The fire occurrence in such premises would lead to interruption of the work process, and very often to impossibility of its recovery. The modern efficient solutions which help to achieve this goal are based on methods for active and passive fire protection. The passive protection is an extinguishing system with clean gas agents, while the active protection relies on a new generation early fire detection system.<\/p>\n

High risk of fire occurrence<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Data centers and data storage premises are exposed to a high risk of fire. The active electrical equipment ensuring a constant power supply as well as the flammable materials embedded in the equipment are prerequisites for fire occurrence. Statistics indicate that fires caused by failure of electronic and power supply equipment, including UPS and air conditioning equipment, are the most common in data centers. Raised floor wiring, cable ducts and other concealed installation areas further increase the fire risk.\u00a0 Therefore, data centers must have the highest degree of protection throughout the building, and the best option is an integrated approach, including the combined interaction of a very early detection and alarm system and a fire extinguishing system.<\/p>\n

An efficient technical solution<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The specific technical solution offered by Synchron-S is an aspirating fire system for very early fire detection combined with a fire extinguishing system using clean gas agents Novec 1230, FM-200 or inert gases Nitrogen and Argon.<\/p>\n

The VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparature) is an active smoke detection system that offers the earliest possible warning of a potential fire. Aspirating smoke-optical detection is a method that provides very early detection and is applicable in highly ventilated environments such as data centers. The typical installation areas are servers, raised floors, suspended ceilings, cable ducts and air ducts. The system consists of a pipe network and aspirating devices, which, by continuous suction through a series of openings, direct the air from the room to a precise, highly sensitive sensor. VESDA sensor technology is based on precise air analysis using two-stage filtration and a laser light source. They are distinguished by an extremely wide range of sensitivity, thanks to which they detect smoke and combustion products in a very low concentration. This allows to locate the fire at a very early stage and prevent its growth. The system is very precisely calibrated compared to standard smoke detection systems, allowing the fire to be detected in the double floor (typical of data centers), whereby standard systems this is impossible due to the high air flow in these areas. When the aspirating system is combined with a high fire hazard extinguishing system such as Novec 1230, FM-200 or Inert gases systems, the aspirating system complements the extinguishing system and thus provides the highest possible degree of protection. The principle of operation is as follows – after notification of a fire and people evacuation, the extinguishing system is activated, and the released gas agents stop burning within seconds. All the time, the equipment in the data center does not stop working.<\/p>\n

The most important requirements for gas extinguishing agents applicable in data centers are safety of personnel, protection of equipment (including from high pressure and turbulence) and an effectiveness in extinguishing type A, B and C fires encountered in these premises. The main characteristic of the offered firefighting gas systems is their exceptional extinguishing efficiency. They put out the fire in its initial stages in the critical few seconds before it grows. The low value of the discharge time parameter, as well as the high value of the protection duration parameter, guarantee a quick and safe fire extinguishing. They are suitable for closed spaces, where locating and extinguishing the fire must be done quickly, cleanly and safely. The extinguishing agents used are clean, harmless to the environment and equipment, and safe for people. They are electrically non-conductive, do not corrode metals, and this makes them suitable for fire protection in rooms with active electrical and electronic equipment. Gas fire extinguishing systems have high levels of safety for people as they stop the combustion process at a high oxygen concentration, in which there is no risk to people. Another advantage of gas fire extinguishing systems is that they no leave residue and no cleaning is required after the agent release. An important parameter to take into account when considering implementation of a fire suppression system in data centers is the size of the rooms and the availability of installation space to accommodate the equipment. Depending on these parameters, the type of fire extinguishing suitable for the specific application is selected.<\/p>\n
